Singapore workers keen to upgrade their skills despite low unemployment rate

Against the backdrop of low unemployment rate of 2%, more than a thousand Singapore workers signed up for career seminars, showing a high level of interest in upgrading their career skills. The inaugural JobsCentral Career Summit 2012 hosted within the JobsCentral Career and Learning Fair, saw keen participation across its 23 seminars over topics on career growth, entrepreneurship, business skills and leadership.

Lim Der Shing, CEO of the JobsCentral Group says, “We are pleased to see strong support for the JobsCentral Career Summit from both students and experienced professionals. It goes to show that lifelong learning and career enhancing skills are valued by and are important to our workforce.”

“Our tight employment market and rising wage costs have incentivised many employers to focus on improving productivity. Employees who continuously upgrade and who become more efficient will be increasingly valued. I am glad that my Singapore workers understand this and embrace learning and skills-growth even when they have a job”, he adds.

The annual JobsCentral Career & Learning Fair that will be held over 25th to 26th August at Suntec Convention and Exhibition Centre Halls 403 and 404, is poised to attract more than 55,000 visits. Employer exhibitors include: Abercrombie & Fitch, Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore, McDonald’s Restaurants, Procter & Gamble, Scoot Pte Ltd, Sephora Singapore, SMRT Corporation and Underwater World Pte Ltd. Besides employers, 24 established education providers including Kaplan Higher Education Institute, MDIS, PSB Academy and SMa Institute of Higher Learning will also be at the fair to offer advice and application opportunities to jobseekers who want to upgrade their qualifications and skills.

Another highlight of the event is the by-invitation-only Networking Session (10am to 1pm, 25th August 2012), where carefully selected participants have the exclusive opportunity to connect with potential employers and institutes of higher learning in a conducive environment. These quality participants are pre-selected based on the needs of the organisations at the event.
