Why Weekends Should Be Off-Limits
By: Durga Elamaran
Bob the Builder says, “Yes we can!”, while most of us working adults would say, “Yes weekend!” There’s always a buzz in the air when Wednesday hits, what with the countdown to the weekend after five days of hard work and sweat.
Of course, there are also the unfortunate ones who are required to work on weekends. But no matter how tight deadlines may be, none deserves to work seven days a week. All work and no play is an awful reality, and unless your life is all about your career, you should be taking a break during weekends.
Here are three reasons why the weekends should be untouched by work.
Say It with Me: Personal Time is Sacred!
After a gruelling week, most of us just want to be able to de-stress and forget about work. That being said, you don’t need a stress-reduction kit that says, “Bang head here!” – all you need is some ‘me time’ during the weekends.
But in wanting to excel in their career, we burden themselves with all sorts of expectations. At the end of the day, they do everything to meet their KPIs but then forget to take a breather, and this can lead to exhaustion.
There is nothing wrong in spending some time with yourself – chilling out with a cappuccino and your favourite novel or taking off for a hike are two great ways! The weekends are the only time you have to pamper and reenergise yourself, and be mentally and physically prepared for another hectic work week.
Time for Family and Friends
Shopping for the latest fashions or the most intriguing and latest gadget is no substitute for quality time with family and friends. Among the millions of people in Singapore, our family and friends are the ones who stick with us through thick and thin. And when we’re occupied with work, we often regrettably forget to spend time with our loved ones.
The weekends are thus perfect for you to make up for the times missed with your loved ones. Put your blazer and tie aside and slip on a pair of comfortable jeans, and either head to a restaurant nearby for dinner with your family or even have a drink or two at a bar with your buddies.
Enjoy Life’s Simple Pleasures
Think – when was the last time you enjoyed a sunset? The hustle and bustle of working life can often leave one feeling drained. And while rushing to meet deadlines during weekdays, you might miss the simple aspects that life has to offer.
They say that the best things in life are free – and all you need is time to experience it. Even sleeping in on a rainy day or enjoying your favourite tunes qualifies! Ultimately, don’t get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life. Work hard during the week, but have a balance and use the weekends to let loose and pursue your dreams.
