Out of a total of 253 votes, 84% feel that employers should not have the option of cutting pay for workers aged 60 and above. 11% agreed that employers should have the option while 5% were unsure. Despite the Government's recent announcement that the option to cut pay for workers aged 60 will stay, the large majority have differing opinions on this issue.
The reason behind this could likely be due to the fact that most companies in Singapore follow a performance-based pay package system rather than a seniority-based wage system. In fact, most employers here have already made a shift away from the latter (where an employee's pay matches his/her length of service). With most employers paying based on an employee's merits and performance, it is not surprising that the large majority would perceive it necessary to have a pay cut at age 60.
