Out of a total of 330 votes, three-quarters (75%) agreed that most scholars today have poor attitudes. 11% disagreed while the remaining 15% were unsure. This response comes after Public Service Commission (PSC) chairman Mr Eddie Teo gave a speech on "Defending Scholarships but not all Scholars" at the Singapore Seminar 2009 in London. In his speech, Mr Teo spoke of some examples of bad behavior exhibited by a handful of young scholars which invited the general public's criticism of scholarships and expressing the desire to end the scholarship system altogether.
Could this negative impression be attributed to the fact that scholars tend to be given more opportunities at work for leadership positions, hence causing an underlying resentment from other employees to arise? Such a reaction could also likely be due to the fact that lacking behavior demonstrated by the small handful of scholars tend to be highly publicised and sensationalized by the media. Our scholars seem to have to live up to a higher set of standards since it is clearly visible to the public that our government is spending large sums of money on this small elite group of scholars.
