Editor's Blog: Annual leave for poly lecturers likely to be cut!

A few weeks ago, a friend teaching at a polytechnic told me that he was considering a career change, due to how there were rumours that annual leave for poly lecturers was going to be cut.

It's now been confirmed that annual leave for academic staff in polys, which is currently 42 days, will be reconsidered as part of a review meant to make a "COMPELLING CAREER PATHWAY" for poly staff.

Some lecturers have told the media that the new number of leave days may be 21 to 28 days. Currently, teaching staff at Republic Poly are already getting just 21 days, which OBVIOUSLY make the drastic cut in leave likely to happen for staff in the other polys.

Final details are expected to be revealed in about three months. A more attractive pay package is expected, but more than 2,800 teaching staff will be affected if leave is cut.

Excuse me, but since when did less annual leave make a job more attractive!? How does having less time for your family and social life translate to a more compelling career pathway you tell me?

And what on earth happened to all that talk about creating better working conditions for people to have time to start families?!

ive heard that ALL staff at

ive heard that ALL staff at republic poly has an option to work from home on any one weekday. I guess they are trying their best to have some work life balance here..

pragmatic

Be pragmatic and practical, 42 days leave? where in the hell can you get this now? besides, it says that the leave is being reviewed as part of the whole package, so perhaps they will get higher salary, if that being the case, should be acceptable. But of course, those unhappy can always find better jobs, I am sure. Isnt't the Poly just like other govt bodies, offer other leave like sick leave, childcare leave, maternity leave etc. Many SMEs don't even offer these !! *sigh* .

in fact the lecturers will be

in fact the lecturers will be given a choice - whether to accept the leave cut and higher pay or remain under existing leave terms ..so it's democratic.

lecturers are currently given

lecturers are currently given 42 days annual leave + 90 days of MC..can u beat that?

I don't see why lecturers and

I don't see why lecturers and professors should be given 42 days of leave. That is totally overboard. All the rest of us gets 14, 18, 21 and max 28! Lecturers and professors are pretty well paid too, so the 42 days is not like to compensate them for lower pay or anything. So I say, CUT! :p

I left lecturing after 5 yrs

I left lecturing after 5 yrs of service.

If you are not in there, you will not know how it is.

42 days of leave is "fake" in that most of the time, you take PAPER LEAVE and still go back to work because of meetings / projects during the term holidays. Every year I have carried over 24 days of leave without fail. It is common to have balance of 60 plus days of leave.

When I tendered my resignation, I had 38 days of leave to clear. That was the only time in 5 years i really enjoyed my leave.

As for salary, again, lecturers are not paid that well. Definately not poly lecturers.

not true, i have some people

not true, i have some people i know who are lecturers, and they really claim 42 days leave!! everytime, i see them, they are on leave..They say its your entiltlement, so its whether you want to do it or not lah...

42 days is out of this world, where got so good outside? these people are just too pampered and complain too much. so i say CUT CUT CUT....

decide to leave, so be it. They have been having too good a life, so go and see how life out there is, ok?

I did ask MOE why so generous, they say so that they got time to do research . Wow, like that i also don't mind if my boss give me 42 days leave, so that I can do "research"!! Where got so naive??

hrmz..

Why so vehement?

Better to cut...

So the new cut will be a better move then.. you don't have to take "fake" leave anymore, and you stand to get a higher pay!
