New Kid On The Block

Singapore is buzzing with excitement after it was announced that a fourth university is set to open its doors in April 2012. Focusing on design-related engineering and architecture, the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) is collaborating with top universities, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Zhejiang University.81 students have already signed up to be the first historic intake of the university and many more are expected to join in the future.

Getting a headstart with CIMA

Accountancy student Dickson Koh shares his thoughts on doing a self-study course with the CIMA.

For most students, school holidays signal the time to rest and relax. But not for 24-year-old Dickson Koh, a second-year accountancy student at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) - he chose to take a self-study course with the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA).

Dickson decided to enrol into a three-month course in Enterprise Operations which gives him a general overview of business covering topics ranging from logistics to human resources. Dickson finds this course helpful. “It helps (me) see the whole picture, how my job fits in the economic environment,” he explains.

Beyond The Classroom

There is more to education than just classroom lessons. Two students from NTU share how the myriad opportunities that the school offers are a stepping stone to greater things in life.

One is a second-year Mathematical Sciences student with an intense passion for numbers while the other is an Interactive Media fresh graduate who has an independent game titled Warpy Boy in the works.

Both of them are poles apart subject-wise but the one common thread that binds them together is the National Technological University (NTU) educational experience. Through a broad-based tertiary education, NTU aims to develop students’ creativity, entrepreneurship, leadership, and interpersonal skills.

Melody Han, Helmi Sedik and Emmanuel Sin come from wholly different backgrounds but the trio are currently living out their dreams under the flag of MTU Asia.

They say nursing is a calling, a profession that no one falls into by chance. Florence Nightingale, celebrated English nurse, attributed her decision to dedicate her life to nursing because of the influence of God. For Nur Fazliana, she credits the influence of her aunt, a nurse.

“Seeing her sense of achievement and accomplishment as well as how content she was with her job made me attracted to the idea of nursing. However, it was looking at how she touched the lives of virtual strangers which truly inspired me,” the 23-year-old says.

Achieving The Perfect Balance With NUS

Juggling work, study and family is no easy feat, but both Chan Ubol and Sukarmin Bin Salamun managed to find that perfect balance with NUS.

Chan Ubol knew juggling work and studies would be tough. However she felt the benefits she would gain from receiving a degree would far outweigh the trials and tribulations she would suffer during the process.

With that in mind, she decided to pursue a part-time degree in Chemical Engineering while working full-time.This will not only allow her to continue having a good income from employment but also gain working experience while studying.The Singapore Polytechnic alumnus had joined a chemical plant as a Project Engineer after completing her diploma in Chemical Engineering.
