Sectors in Focus (IT)

By Chai Fook Tien

With technology being integrated into almost every aspect of our lives, IT has become almost ubiquitous. Our world is quickly becoming smarter and more interconnected, and society is only set to become more IT-inclined.

A Thriving Sector

Singapore herself already has a vibrant IT sector. According to the World Economic Forums’s Global Information Technology Report 2014, Singapore ranks second in the world as the most network-ready country. As one of the world’s most connected nations, Singapore is an attractive location for IT investors to do business on. The already robust IT sector is set to grow even more as money is continually being pumped into it.

Government Backing

The growth of the industry is backed by the government itself. The most notable of the state’s efforts is the Smart Nation Programme, initiated by the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore’s (IDA). As part of this Smart Nation initiative, the IDA has plans to expand Singapore’s technology community by fostering new talents. With a strong IT infrastructure, backed by a legal and regulatory environment, Singapore continues to be an attractive location for companies to invest in. Thus resulting in many positions opening up for the sector.

A Bounty of Opportunities

If you are interested in joining the IT sector, you can expect to find a vibrant and exciting industry full of diversity. The IT ecosystem is driven by experimentation. There is a huge variety of growth opportunities in the sector, such as data analytics, cloud computing, cyber security, mobile solutions, and social media. A career in IT offers many options. Just based on potential employers alone, you will find that you are spoilt for choice. You can choose to work for a software development company, a hardware manufacturer, a telecommunications company, a technology services company, or inside a corporate IT department. Job scopes within the sector are equally abundant.

The types of jobs you can pursue include:

Hardware Engineer

Programmer/Software Developer/Software Engineer

• Enterprise Architect/IT Architect

IT Administrator

IT Security

Note that this list is not comprehensive. There are many other job functions that exist based on the needs of the organisation. And because of the constantly-evolving nature of the IT industry, some jobs may be phased out, while new jobs may be created. So explore the industry and find your perfect fit.

Is the IT Sector for You?

People looking to join the IT sector should know the harsh truth – IT jobs are demanding and potentially stressful. Many jobs require long working hours and entail lots of responsibility. And because most of IT work happens in the backend, there will be little recognition in return for your efforts. With that said, careers in IT have their own appeal. People who have highly analytical minds that can appreciate the beauty of logic will find IT careers highly rewarding. IT careers often test your problem-solving skills, and those who derive pleasure from tinkering with things and watching them fall into place will find themselves right at home.

Lastly, because of the rapid development of technology, continual improvement is a must. In order to remain relevant, you must constantly be learning new things. So if you are looking to join the IT sector, be sure that you have a passion for perpetual learning.
