What Your Smartphone Says About You

By Julailah Wahid

My daily commute always makes for an interesting experience. Besides dealing with overly pushy middle-aged individuals, I have to work my way through a sea of smartphone users on and off the train – people texting or WhatsApp-ing (yes, it’s a verb now just like Google), office workers reading news (and Facebook) updates and ladies watching foreign dramas on their phones.

Let’s face it. Smartphones are E V E R Y W H E R E. I’m telling you, it’s an epidemic!

Mobile companies are obviously hell-bent on world domination, what with the eagerness to release a new phone model every six months or so (S4, anyone?).

Well, you know what they say, if you can't beat 'em, join 'em, so we might as well accept that these handy devices are essentially extensions of ourselves.

That being said, your smartphone can reveal much more about your personality than you might think. We weigh in on what your smartphone says about you:

You are a geek, an architect, a graphic designer or someone who has way too much time to fiddle with the 180,000+ applications available on the App Store. You are someone who enjoys having a variety of options in life, which is exactly what the iPhone offers with its wide spread of games and camera support tools. As you fear being left behind by the pack, you’re always in search of new products, no matter how half-baked or flimsy they appear to be.

The Android phone grants users a good level of flexibility as they can personalise the interface to suit their desired functionality. Therefore Android users are most likely to possess creative personalities and enjoy a personal touch to their accessories and relationships. Androids aren’t particularly pretty (or easy to hold) and do not come with a variety of gaudy back covers, signifying that users value competency and reliability over trivial superficialities.

As any Blackberry user would tell you, “Once you go Black, you’ll never go back”.

The Blackberry is a personal digital assistant more than anything else. Your “let’s get down to business” attitude means that you’re probably in lucrative employment, perhaps a venture capitalist, journalist or politician. As a BB user, you do not fall prey to social norms and aren’t swayed by vintage camera effect tools. You see iPhone users as overgrown children who would rather spend their time crushing candies than doing actual work.

You won’t admit it, but you’re cooler than cool – you’ve got Swedish House Mafia and Audioslave on your playlist and a collection of David Fincher movies in your living room. Although WhatsApp is the popular option among your pals, your heart will always be with BBM because of its lightning fast speed, and it doesn’t require you to set up an external app account that could possibly become compromised.
